Human Cytomegalovirus PP65 is a herpes viral genus of the Herpesviruses group: in humans it is commonly known as HCMV or Human Herpesvirus 5 (HHV-5).
CMV belongs to the Betaherpesvirinae subfamily of Herpesviridae, which also includes Roseolovirus. In addition, the CMV pp65 protein is a frequent target for the exceptionally strong CMV-specific CD8(+) T cell response.
The 65 kDa phosphoprotein (PP65) from the human cytomegalovirus (CMV), also called human herpesvirus 5, targets the nucleus immediately after viral infection. HCMV is also the virus most frequently transmitted to a developing fetus. CMV pp65 is the early-late lower matrix phosphoprotein of CMV that may be relevant to the etiopathogenesis of scleroderma. HCMV infection is more widespread in developing countries and in communities with lower socioeconomic status and represents the most significant viral cause of birth defects in industrialized countries.
